Benjamin Henry Ltd is a residential construction company specialising in the conversion & restoration of barns & traditional agricultural buildings across Somerset & the South West.
From historic stone barns & traditional farm buildings to contemporary conversions, our experienced team combines structural expertise, traditional craftsmanship & modern building-performance knowledge to create exceptional homes while preserving the character of the original building.
Based in Taunton, we work closely with homeowners, architects & consultants to deliver substantial barn conversions - from structural works & building fabric through to bespoke joinery, services, finishes & final handover.

Our Approach
Barn conversions require a different approach from conventional new-build construction. Existing structures often contain irregular masonry, historic roof structures, limited foundations & unusual junctions that demand careful investigation & skilled workmanship.
Our approach is to understand the original building first, then introduce the structural, thermal & service upgrades required to create a comfortable modern home - balancing original character, structural integrity, energy performance, planning constraints & the quality of every detail.
Structural Work & Existing Fabric
We respond to the building in front of us rather than applying a standard specification - retaining sound fabric wherever possible & strengthening or rebuilding only where the structure requires it.

Traditional Craftsmanship & Bespoke Joinery
Our joinery is made by our own craftsmen, so it can be considered as part of the overall architectural delivery rather than an isolated finishing trade - planned alongside the structure from the outset.
Oak doors, staircases, windows, bespoke kitchens, fitted furniture, internal joinery & exposed timber detailing are all designed to suit the proportions & character of the barn. Explore our bespoke joinery & architectural timberwork.
Modern Building Performance
Old agricultural buildings can be upgraded carefully for modern living. Insulation, airtightness, moisture management & ventilation - including MVHR where appropriate - are specified to suit how the existing walls & roof behave, so upgrades protect the building rather than trap moisture within it.
High-performance glazing, heating systems & heat pumps, solar PV, battery storage & smart controls can then be integrated to make the home efficient to run. On our Church Barn project, for example, the finished home includes a ground-source heat pump & solar panels.
Not every barn conversion needs to meet a certified standard, but the same building science applies. Read about our Passivhaus & high-performance construction, our approach to heritage & listed buildings, or our specialist division Benjamin Henry Electrics.
Complete Barn Conversion Delivery
We take responsibility for the whole build, coordinating our in-house team & trusted specialists so each stage flows into the next. See how we plan & deliver a project.
